In my 8th Edition, Pat lists "What It Takes" by Aerosmith as 'neither the 45 or LP version' on the CD Big Ones. If it hasn't been corrected, this comment should be listed as LP version. Even though the song runs (6:28) on Pump and only (5:10) on Big Ones, this is because on Pump there is an instrumental song that was not given its own track.

If you listen to "What It Takes" on Pump, you'll see that the song completely fades out by (5:10), then there's about nine seconds of blank space before the instrumental song comes on.

Aaron my feeling on this is that all other selections on this cd are essentially segued together and with :09 between "What It Takes" and the uncredited instrumental, that is far longer than the industry standard for separating tracks on a cd so I don't feel that it is an uncredited instrumental at all but probably a coda.

Anyone else wish to weigh in on this question?

I see your point, Pat. I always assumed that this was similar to "Dulcimer Stomp," which is the short instrumental before "The Other Side" on Pump, opening side two of the record. Perhaps your comment in the book, like the way you labeled "The Other Side," could read "LP version without coda" next to Big Ones.

I agree with Aaron's suggestion to use an (LP version without coda) comment for the 5:10 version of "What It Takes", especially considering the 10th edition already shows the Pump CD on Geffen 24254 and 069493097 with the comment: (LP version with coda).

I agree, the comment (LP version without the coda" sounds appropriate.

From Webster's dictionary, coda is defined as "a concluding musical section that is formally distinct from the main structure".

I have Aerosmith's "What It Takes" on a promo CD single (Geffen PRO-CD-3852) which contains the following tracks and actual run times:

1) CHR Remix/Edit - 4:06 (printed time: 4:06)
2) LP Version - 5:11 (not 6:28 as printed on the CD label)

Can anyone confirm if the "CHR Remix/Edit" is the same as the commercial single version? I don't have a copy of the latter to verify.

Also, is the "CHR Remix/Edit" really remixed, or is it just an edit? I have both versions, but I've never compared the mixes. This is one of those songs that I prefer the album version, because the edits on the single version are very jarring.

Commercial cassette single copies of Aerosmith's "What It Takes" has an actual run time of 4:06 and does state "Remix/Edit" on the label. As of this time, I still don't know if it's identical to the "CHR Remix/Edit", but I can at least compare the latter to the LP version and see any actual mix differences can be detected.

my commercial cassingle issued as geffen 19944 states the tracks as below

1-what is takes (remix/edit) (4:06)
2-monkey on my back (lp version) (3:56)

todd...i did some more digging on my end and i can confirm that the "remix/edit" version which is on the cassingle is identical to the "chr remix edit" that is on the promo cd single.....hopefully this one is put to rest....

Any conformation on this yet?

I just A/B'd the version on Big Ones with the CHR Remix/Edit, and nothing is jumping out at me. I'll have to do a more careful listen when time permits, but if I had to make the call right now, I'd say they are the same mix.

I just heard a version of this song on an old Casey Kasem countdown
where it sounds like a completely different vocal take was used. It had
all the typical edit points that I'm used to. Could this be a case of some
copies having a completely remixed version and others just have an
edit of the album version?
