Two separate charts runs for this song, info from Billboard:

Def American 4-19668, debut on 10/27/1990, peaked at #45 on 12/15/1990, 15 weeks total on chart

Def American 4-19245, debut on 6/22/1991, peaked at #26 on 8/17/1991, 14 weeks total on chart

One or both of these is the drastic remix with horns, which really doesn't get any airplay nowadays. It didn't even get much airplay back then, if I remember correctly.

I've always considered the LP version to be the "hit", but I'll ask the experts:

Does anyone know what the story was with the remix? Were both singles released with the remix? Was one version considered a failure, so Def American released another?

I know that "Jealous Again" was the first single from the album, HTH was the second, "She Talks To Angels" was the third, and HTH was the fourth, but I've never gotten a good explanation of the whole horns remix thing...

Yes, 'edtop40', the promo CD is Def Americam PRO-CD-4896.

Track 1 is "album version", track 2 is labeled "remix" (both listed times 3:08).

Has any COMMERCIAL release, in any format, contained the aforementioned remix?

Here you go, Ed:

Black Crowes-"Hard To Handle" (PRO-CD-4896)
1-Album Version (listed & actual time 3:08)
2-Remix (listed 3:08; actual 3:07)

FYI, we happened to play the "Album Version" for this in 1991; we really weren't crazy about all the horns in the remix. To help refresh my memory, I pulled out our old 1991 station playlists. After "Hard To Handle" didn't really break through Top 40 in its initial release, Def American then released "She Talks To Angels" as the follow-up. We did add this song, on 4/19/91, and played it for five weeks. I remember that it didn't do all that well for us, and I see that it only peaked at #30 in Billboard. But, as is often the case, Def American thought they could now re-work "Hard To Handle" to Top 40, and this time meet with better success, based on their "She Talks To Angels" mini-breakthrough. As I recall, Def American always thought the Album Version was the stronger cut, but just to give Top 40 radio a fresh, second option, decided to include a "Remix", as Cut 2. We first added "Hard To Handle" on 6/21/91, played it for 10 weeks, and it peaked at #6 on our survey, on 8/9/91. Ron, I hope this information helped to answer your question here.

Someone who owns one or both of the cassette singles will have to chime in with more, but I do know about the 45 (7-inch) release.

The first version (19668) was not issued as a 7-inch single; the commercial release was a cassette only.

The second version (7-19245) is labeled as "(Album Version)" on the label with a listed time of 3:08. The flip side was "Waitin' Guilty," which I assume was a non-LP B-side because of the lack of album credits on that side.

Bringing back an old thread, I had a someone ask if the horns version is available on cd, and I think the answer is still no. I notice the database makes no mention of the horn remix being on a promo CD to radio stations. I know I played it at G-105 Raleigh on the promo CD mentioned on this string. Should this info be added to the database about this song?

For what it's worth, TM Century issued the "Remix" on their CHR HitDisc in 1991. I wasn't in radio at the time, and I don't remember if the CHR stations in my area played it or not. I actually like the remix just as much as I like the album version and the Otis Redding original.

I'm pretty sure that the 19245-4 single was issued first in 1990, while the 19668-4 single was (re)issued in 1991.

I tend to disagree. I think crapfromthepast had it correct getting the info from Billboard. In the Fall of 1982 the WEA group of labels (Warner-Elektra-Atlantic and their subsidiaries of which Def American was one of dozens) started numbering their single releases in reverse. So 19245-4 was released after 19668-4. Why they released them in reverse numerical order, I have no clue. Maybe they did this just to confuse us record store people ;) -Bill.

In NY, when the song was a re-current, the only station
I heard the remix on was Z100. I liked it, but had no
idea where to get it until i found the promo single in a
used CD store.

For those interested, the Remix version with horns has appeared on the new release of 'Shake your money maker'
by the Black Crowes, expanded edition. In fact there are 2 expanded editions. I guess it's a 30th anniversary
thing. Is it 30 years already?? -Bill.

Bill - I'd heard that the WEA labels numbered their 45s backwards so that the new releases would appear at the top of the lists when they were printed out in numerical order.

If that's true, then the numbering was done specifically *for* record store people! :)

Ron, Very
possible. I tried to get answers out of the WEA salesmen during the 80's, but they were as clueless as I. In
1989 I wrote to Ken Clee @ Stax-O-Wax who put out "The Directory of American 45 R.P.M. Records", and asked
him for his explanation, he couldn't get an 'official' answer. If it was a marketing move to get to the top
of a new release list, I would've thought that other major labels would have jumped on the wagon, but no.
Even their 'Back to Back' re-issue series ran backwards. -Bill.

I agree, it is different
from the LP version found on "Shake your money maker", but if you take a listen
to the ORIGINAL version done by Otis Redding released posthumously on 'The
Immortal Otis Redding', He has a very similar horn arrangement. This was
released on a single in 1968 (BB-#51). It was released also by Patti Drew a few
months later (BB-#93) and also has a similar horn arrangement (except hers adds
trombones in the beginning) so I would assume that the 'Horn Remix' version is
more faithfull to the original. -Bill.

The "Remix" is my preferred version, FWIW. I love the added horns.
