My vinyl US 45, A&M 1267, states a run time of 3:44 but actually runs 3:38. It is a remix by Tom Lord-Alge (final 7"). It is not mentioned in db. Some possible reasons why it is not mentioned could be:

1) This version is actual the same as the CD(LP)-version (A&M 5163 - All That Jazz) - I do not have this one so I could control it
2) The Casette single is different and matches the LP-version (I'm not sure if vinyl or casette version is the 'true' single version)

Is there someone who can help me with this?

Oddbjorn, it's funny you mention it, because I was just reviewing this song last week. You are absolutly correct that the 45 is a different mix than the LP version for All That Jazz. The database should have the "LP version" designator next to that listing.

Nice catch! And welcome to the board!

Wow, I never realized the "Don't Tell Me Lies" 45 consists of a different mix! Nice work, gentlemen (and welcome, Oddbjorn)!

So does the 45 mix exist anywhere on a promo CD single? I imagine it does considering I have Breathe's Top 40 predecessor "How Can I Fall" on a DJ CD single release.

Yep! As a matter of fact, Todd, this one is on promo CD single. I believe Jim can confirm the details of it when he gets the chance.

my commercial 45 issued as a&m 1267 states on the label (final 7") with a listed running time of 3:44 but it actually runs 3:40 and is identical the the version on jim's and mine promo cd single.....this 45 label info should be added to the db............

I have the promo CD single. It does say "Final 7"" and runs an actual 3:40, though it's labeled 3:41. It comes in a slimline jewel case and says "Remixed by Tom Lord-Alge" on the insert. The insert has the same picture as on Ed's commercial single, except it's not color, it's a pale yellow/sepia type of coloring. It's A&M CD 17664.

Funny, I found that same CD promo for "Don't Tell Me Lies" at work just about a week ago.
We have a closet full of "lost" stuff.
A&M was great, it serviced radio with CD pro's and quality vinyl promo 45's.

I don't know how I missed Jim's post, but oh, well, wow you have double confirmation of the run time.

I've seen this song on a couple of imports. What's the best way to distinguish the remix from the LP version?

The correct US 7" remix appears on the recent 2013 double
disc deluxe edition of the All That Jazz album on the
Cherry Pop label (a division of Cherry Red Records, UK).
This set has a total of five different versions of this
song (LP version, Dance Mix, Extended version and UK 7"
version). Sound is very good on the set.

As far how to identify the correct remix, here is what
Mark tells me on that subject:

"The main difference in the remix from the LP version is
the 45 remix has much more reverb on most of the
mix....like the loud synth riff that plays as soon as the
drums start - on the LP it sounds like a small room, but
the 45 sounds like a big auditorium."

I hope Mark doesn't mind me quoting him on this one.

Another way you can tell the difference
between the Album and Single Versions is
that on the Album Version, the first
chorus begins with lead singer David
Glasper singing, "Don't Tell Me Lies". On
the Single Version, the first chorus
begins with him singing, "SO Don't Tell Me
Lies". (Actually, I don't know if calling
it a chorus is really accurate, since he
only sings the title a few times in
between the verses).

These are the versions I was able to track down:

original UK single version (3:39, possibly listed as 3:44): The January 1986 UK 7" release with no mix title given, and 1985 copyrights, suggesting it may have been planned for late '85 release but was delayed, perhaps because the video wasn't finished until December 20th.

US single version a.k.a. Final 7" (3:41, often printed as 3:44): This is the hit version. It is a "remix" is credited to Tom Lord-Alge. Apparently it was planned for a 1988 release in the US & CA (based on the catalog numbers and promo CD copyrights), but was delayed to January 1989, when it was issued with confusing 1987 copyrights. Released in the UK & elsewhere in March 1989 as the 7" Version, variously with or without the Tom Lord-Alge credit.

I'm not convinced the hit version is really a remix, but just a remaster. As compared to the 1986 version, it just has a slight change in EQ, a left/right channel swap, and a 1-second longer, louder fade-in. Everything else about it is identical to the original single.

Extended Version (5:38): Debuted on the January 1986 UK 12" release. Reissued in 1989 as 12" Mix in the US (with I think an erroneous Tom Lord-Alge remix credit), and as Extended Version (duration "5:40") elsewhere.

Full Length Version (4:08): Exclusive to the 1989 US 12", remix credited to Tom Lord-Alge. I have not yet heard this one.

The following are remixes by John Morales:

Dance Mix (6:47): On the 2nd record in the 1986 limited UK 12" double-pack.

12" Dub Mix (4:59): On the 2nd record in the 1986 limited UK 12" double-pack. The labels have the wrong duration (3:44) and no remix credit.

album version (3:42): On all releases of the 1987 All That Jazz album, except the rare 1st edition UK LP, which doesn't have the song at all.

The album version is based on the single version but has elements of the Dance Mix in it. The most noticeable difference to me isn't the reverb, but rather the added bongos throughout the song. Also, after the drums start up at 10 seconds in, there's no droning guitar chord like there is on the singles. And as mentioned, no "so" lyric as the chorus starts at 1:02.

I just want to add to mike's post, and as Santi Paradoa
commented in 2013, that the deluxe box set released by
Cherry Pop of the album
"All That Jazz", has the version included:

- Don't Tell Me Lies(LP) 3:42
- Don't Tell Me Lies (1986 UK 7" Version) 3:42
- Don't Tell Me Lies (1989 US 7" Version) 3:41
- Don't Tell Me Lies (Dance Mix) 6:49
- Don't Tell Me Lies (Extended Version)     5:40

Jaz z

By the way, does anyone have the Full Length Version
(4:08): Exclusive to the 1989 US 12", remix credited to
Tom Lord-Alge?, I'd like to hear it and compare it with
the rest of the versions, thanks for advance.

Cheers
