Pat:

In the 10th edition, you comment that each CD appearance of Len's "Steal My Sunshine" is either the: ("Go" soundtrack and 45 version) or the ("You Can't Stop the Bum Rush" LP version). While the soundtrack and LP versions are definitely different, I'm wondering how you came up with the 45 version comment because I don't think the song was ever released on any commercial single format, was it? Joel Whitburn even shows the song as only being available as a promo CD single release in his Top Pop Singles book.

Technically, since this song was not released in a commercial format other than on two different full length cd's, I should not indicate 45 or single version. But, since the promo cd single was the version found on the soundtrack to "Go", that is obviously the version that got the most airplay on the radio and in my opinion should be designated as the "hit" version.

Any one else have other opinions on how this should be noted in the next edition?

Pat:

In the new database, I notice you're still listing the soundtrack version of Len's "Steal My Sunshine" as also being the 45 version. Since the song was never released on a commercial single format, I'm thinking it might be better to rephrase the comment something like this:

(soundtrack version which is also the "hit" version)

The final decision of course is yours, sir.

my promo cd single issued in 1999 as work/sony music soundtrack osk 41510 does not state a version or run time on the cd itself or inserts...but it runs 3:42....shouldn't this be the official single version and run time??

While I have no opinion regarding "single" status, I would like to add that there are two different versions of this song. The most common version has talking into the intro and between the first two verses (some nonsense about butter tarts, and "Karen, I love you!"), while the edit I prefer does not contain those "ad libs". I believe these are identical, otherwise.

The version of Len's "Steal My Sunshine" I've always heard on the radio is the one from the Go soundtrack with no talking during the intro and first two verses. The database shows the Go soundtrack with a run time of 4:08, so Ed's report that the song runs 3:42 on his promo CD single is certainly significant. Well, I dug up my Promo Only: Mainstream Radio CD subscription series and discovered that "Steal My Sunshine" only runs 3:29 on it! So now I'm confused because I always thought the correct radio edit/length was on my Promo Only disc. Is the 3:42 promo CD an edit or an early fade of the 4:08 length?   And is there another promo CD single release that contains the 3:29 length found on the Promo Only CD? (I suppose it's possible the song was manually faded earlier on the latter.)

The 3:29 version is also on Napster on the Zack And Miri Make A Porno.

Todd, I just pulled my promo CD single for this, and all my info mirrors Ed's (also OSK 41510, except that my actual run time was 3:41, not 3:42). However, by 1999, I was not as fanatical in tracking down every variance for promo/commercial CD singles as I had been previously. Although I much prefer to report from what I actually own, in a case like this, I've found that sometimes the "Musicstack" website (and also the Gemm/Discogs sites) can be helpful. And there DOES appear to be a 2nd, U.S. promo CD single issued: 2 tracks, on OSK 40481: 1-Album Version (4:03), and 2-Album Edit (3:30) (I have just ordered this promo), from which Cut 2 appears to jive with your "Promo Only" CD version. Since the lower-numbered, OSK 40481 promo was likely issued before my OSK 41510 promo CD single was, and with both "Go" soundtrack and album versions for this song existing, I can certainly see a scenario where the OSK 40481 promo CD single came out first, and was included on Todd's Promo disc. Then Work/Columbia decided that the "Go" version was the better version/way to go for this song, and then sent our station that one, the OSK 41510 promo CD single, which was the one we ultimately played. Hope this helps!

There have also been many instances where two promo CDs existed because they were sent to two different formats. I believe we received a copy of the 2-track promo at our college radio station (alternative format). Perhaps the 1-track was only sent to pop stations.

From what I've discovered through my internet travels...

1) Album Version is listed as 4:01. (Just listened to this clip and it has the chatter too.)
2) Album Edit is listed as 3:29 - no chatter.
3) My 'Go Soundtrack' version has chatter and runs 4:08.
4) Ed's promo CD version at 3:41 - no chatter.

Interesting, John. I actually don't have the Go soundtrack on CD, so I wasn't aware it contains the chatter during the intro. I just assumed since the database indicates the Go soundtrack version is "the most popular version for radio station airplay" that it was the no chatter intro I've always heard on the radio.

I bought the Go Soundtrack version file via digital download a few years back. Even my copy from RPM Top Hits has the chatter, but they fade it out a few seconds early, per usual.

I wouldn't trust the "digital download" version to be the official soundtrack version until someone with the CD confirms it. As we've seen in other cases, those downloads sometimes do not match the CD.

I have just received in the 2-track promo CD single for this song that I ordered last month, and, as promised, here are the particulars:

Len-"Steal My Sunshine" (OSK 40481)
1-Album Version (listed 4:09; actual 4:00)
2-Album Edit (listed 3:38; actual 3:29)

This CD single says track 1 is from both the FORTHCOMING "Go" Movie Soundtrack & the "You Can't Stop The Bum Rush" CD, while Track 2 says it is a "Special Version" from those same two forthcoming releases, for whatever's that's worth.

This is the same as what we received at the station I was at in 1999. Strange you didn't receive this one as your station seemed to have top-notch service from the labels.

So, now the question is, where does Ed's promo cd version, running 3:41, come from?

It is an official promo version:

        https://www.discogs.com/ Len-Steal-My-Sunshine/release/10441095

I have labeled in my collection the album edit (3:29) to also be a hit version. No idea if radio ever played the 3:41 promo version, but it appears to also be a hit version. How rare!

Len-"Steal My Sunshine" Label Code: OSK 41510

1- Steal My Sunshine 3:42 (Actual 3:40)

I'm glad you brought this up, because there are FIVE different versions worth noting:

1) The non-described version on OSK 41510 has a :24 intro before the first vocals and fades at the end. This has the full sound effect intro before the music starts, as found on both the Go soundtrack and You Can't Stop The Bum Rush, but unlike the albums it does not contain any chatter.
2) The "Album Edit" on OSK 40481 has a :16 intro and fades at the end. The first :09 of the sound effects has been edited off, and the intro does not fade in. This version also does not contain any chatter.
3) The "Album Version" from OSK 40481 has an :08 intro before the chatter starts. The first :09 of the sound effects have been edited off, but it fades in rather than starts at full volume. This version ends cold with an echoing "sunshine."
4) The Go soundtrack version has a :15 intro before the chatter starts and ends cold with an echoing "sunshine."
5) The version on You Can't Stop The Bum Rush has a :15 intro before the chatter starts, but it fades out at the end and segues into an interlude at 3:58.

Pat, the database currently has several discs labeled as "Go soundtrack version which was the most popular version for radio airplay." I would suggest amending the notation to simply read "Go soundtrack LP version." In all my years of hearing this song on the radio, there's only one version I've ever heard played: the Album Edit from OSK 40481, which is the version without the chatter. I'm sure a fair amount of radio stations also played the no chatter version with the longer intro found on OSK 41510.

And to complicate things more, here's the music video, which has a :15 intro,
no chatter before the first verse, different chatter right before the second
verse and ending on an echoed "Sunshine".
