pat or anyone on the board:

is the 45 a remix of the cd/lp version?

the db states only that all the versions on cds are the
"lp version"

the 45 sounds much punchier...it says on the 45's face
"produced by alex sadkin, engineered by barry mraz,
mixed by alex sadkin, barry mraz and chris
dickie".....the 45 is faster than the cd
version.....the 45 lists a run time of 4:18 but
actually runs 4:14....the cd version is slower and runs
4:21

Ed I only have a dj copy of this 45 and the "A" side is a dj edit that runs (4:04). The "B" side which I will assume is the commercial 45 since it states a running time of (4:18) but really runs (4:14) sounds the same to me as the LP but it is sped up. The record label even states LP version on it and the producer and mixing credits are the same on the 45 as on the LP. I have also added some comments to the database about the (4:21) versions that are showing up on a number of cd's and they run (4:21) because the fade at the end is actually :03 longer than on the original LP.

I just did a comparison of "The Right Thing" between the CD and 45 versions. While there certainly is a pitch difference, the 45 is also a slight remix. Ed, you are correct that the 45 sounds "punchier." I am hearing some added instrumentation, even though it's subtle.

Bumping this up, because the database still needs to be updated. Pat, if you need a specific reference point for mix differences (other than just moving instruments from one channel to another), check out the "do do do..." section at 1:13 and the verse that follows. The 45 has a very prominent keyboard, while the LP has either a different keyboard, or it's just mixed so far back, you can't hear it well. At 3:12, I'm also hearing an overdubbed keyboard that isn't present on the LP version. I agree with Ed that the drums are punchier, too.

Hi folks,

Needed the revive this subject with a question.

I was updating my mp3 selection for Simply Red, Rhapsody has the "Expanded Editions" of the old albums so i got a few 12" mixes I didn't have.
While there i was curious to see if the 45 mix of The Right Thing was on anything, because i noticed it does not appear on any cd's in the database.
I have the greatest hits CD from '96 and i compared that mix to the one on "25" and as the database indicates, they are both the LP version.
But i noticed the the "Expanded Edition" of the "Men And Women" album is a different mix from those other 2.

So, i haven't had the 45 since '92 and nothing to compare, so my question is does anyone have this expanded edition who could verify that when Rhino re-issued this album they used the 45 mix instead?
BTW, i had to listen real closely at first, the differences start subtle as described above.
I hear punchier drum on the snare hit, different keyboard parts and overall different placement in the mix for some elements.
The speed, however, does not sound that much faster, and it runs 4:18. I wonder if it's merely the 45 master but running slightly slower.

Any input appreciated.

Hi again,

I compared the version on "Men And Women [Expanded Edition]" to the 45 version that Aaron sent me and i can confirm it is the 45 version on the album, running slower.
I pitched it to match the 45 dub and they are identical.

Seems this expanded edition is only available in online digital form, or as a UK import on CD. Happy shopping!

Is the opening note supposed to sound like it was slightly clipped?

FYI, for those looking for the 45 version on CD, it's also available on the UK "Now 1987" 2 CD set, as well as the UK "Now 9" CD. I have a feeling those are both pretty rare CDs, though.

Sorry to bump this, but some time ago I bought the LP version on iTunes, only to find that the first note sounded slightly chopped off. Was it that
way on the actual album? (The single seems to have the first note fully intact.)

Thx!

The LP version on the 1996 Greatest Hits disc has its opening note intact.

Then it's an iTunes issue. Interesting. Thx, Ron.

Doug,
As noted above, if you downloaded it from the expanded edition of the album, I think that's the 45 version. They swapped it out for the digital release.
The opening note was clipped in error.

I have the 4:14 single version on UK Now 1987
compilation disc.    Does anyone have the 4:04 edit from
the promo 45? I am curious what was edited or is it an
early fade? I'd like like to recreate it.

I do, but it's with my old collection at my dads! I can get it for the weekend if no one else comes forward before then?
