Pat's LISTED times for the promo 45 are correct: the (5:08) listed and actual (Original Version) on one side, and a listed (3:15), but an actual timing of (3:13), (Edited Version) on the other. I bring this up because currently, the two shortest database CD appearances have timings of (3:22) and (3:24), on Stax various artists CDs. But they are still (:09) and (:11) longer than the short promo's actual run time. But for many years, I have owned a stereo, listed (3:44), actual (3:16) CD version, on a 1987 Silver Eagle/Warner Special Products mail order 2-disc set called "Tender Moments." This piece is not currently listed in the database. Stock # is OPCD-4507. I consider this my "go-to" CD short version source for this song, at just (:03) longer than the actual promo 45.

My commercial 45 for this, which is mono, has a listed time of (5:08), but an actual time of (5:05).

i'm not one to ever question jim's veracity regarding these
types on matters, but my commercial 45 issued as volt 4075
starts off with the thunder sound effects cascading from
one side to the other....during the middle part of the song
the thunder is clearly heard in the right channel
only.....the rest of the song sounds mono.......can someone
else check as to what i'm hearing and report back....maybe
i'm just losing it!!!

Ed, that's certainly possible, especially during early 1972, when Stax/Volt
were transitioning their 45s to stereo. I invite/encourage others to double-
check me on that one. Besides, I've heard a surprising # of 45s issued during
that era where the only evidence of stereo was found during "sound effects"
song portions.

Yes, Stax singles were still mono with rare exceptions in that period. 1973 was the transition year for Stax/Volt/etc Stereo 45 releases.

The mono stock copy I have is very crackly and very hissy. In all seriousness, the crackle and hiss is making me wonder if, perhaps, an additional layer of rain sound effects was added on top of the stereo fold-down. Both the "Edited Version" and "Original Version" on the promo has no additional crackle or hiss and are in stereo. I think this is simply a case where I have a VG condition copy pressed on very poor quality vinyl, but I'm also hearing a distinct "hiss" that starts when the song begins (not in the deadwax). Can that be chalked up to a poor quality tape used to press the 45?

It could be that the rain sound effects were from another vinyl record.
I know that a Hal Blaine solo hot rod album ("Deuces, "T's", Roadsters & Drums", 1963) used hot rod sound effects from a vinyl sound effects record, so it's not unheard of.

Quite possibly. What I don't know is if all the additional crackle is my
vinyl or if something has been added. My copy is not great sounding. It
would be much easier to tell if I had a VG+ or better copy.

Aaron sent me a dub of the crackly vinyl 45, and it's definitely tape hiss, not a record-playing type of crackle.
It's most pronounced starting after 0:23, after the rain sound effects subside. And the hiss ends, cold, just before the needle enters the runout area. (Aaron's dub has a recognizable "donk" sound when the needle hits the runout area.)
My guess: A very high-generation source tape.

Thanks for confirming. I figured they didn't likely add any additional sound effects, but the hiss is really bad on the stock copy.
