I seem to remember the clean radio mix (4:23) being the hit version for this song. Am I wrong? I see the LP version that Whitburn in his annual references (3:05) but that was track 6 on the promos and even the cassette had longer versions on it.

The US Promo CD

Cassette listing album version as 3rd and second one not at all

https://www.discogs.com/release/2177720-95-South-Whoot-There -It-Is-Ultimix

Based on this the commercial version isn't the LP version, unless my memory is wrong. Unless Whitburn references a cassette not on discogs the LP version couldn't have been the commercial release.

Even the 7'' has the radio style not the LP.

I'm going to change the "official" Pop Annual time to (4:23) on this one. I honestly don't remember why
that shorter time was entered in the first place.

Paul,

Don't mean to question you but you are generally accurate with the commercially available version. The problem is during the 90's there were often a lot of promo mixes even on cassette and this is a case where I don't think anyone heard the LP version. If I ask questions on the board, generally it is because the time you have doesn't match a cassette/promo/single....

This song didn't get played in regular rotation on my local top 40 stations, but I seem to recall a mix show playing the Ultimix version. I've always considered the "Radio Style" version to be the hit, as it's on the music video. The clean version has a different vocal take and changes the lyrics from "where the booty at" to "where the body at." I bought the maxi CD single when it was new, but I never played the clean version.

I just looked, and I have two promo CD singles. Neither one of them has the Clean Radio Mix. Only the commercial CD maxi has this mix, which means it's less likely urban radio stations would've played the clean version.

Yes, I'm well aware of all of that. As you know, we generally went with the first cut
on the commercial cassette single as the "official" version, but there are always
going to be exceptions, and this is one of them. The 1990s were a hot mess, for sure!

And I'm ALWAYS open to learning more and making adjustments where needed, so keep questioning!!!

I don't know where that CD comes from, but it's not listed as a promo, and I doubt it's a US pressing. The two US promo CDs I have are not on Climax Records.
